SkyMate - Small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite System
Small LEO systems, including the ORBCOMM system used by SkyMate, are similar to the Large LEO systems in that the satellites orbit at relatively low altitudes and require lower amounts of power using smaller, non-pointing antennas. The main difference is that the ORBCOMM system used by SkyMate is a packet data system, unlike the circuit-based system of the Large LEOs. In a packet data system, information is transmitted in very short bursts of less than one second, requiring very little power—a huge advantage for a marine system. SkyMate’s low power consumption allows the communicator to be 'always on' and ready to receive short email messages sent from land, or to transmit monitoring and positioning information at scheduled intervals.

In addition to the extremely efficient use of transmitter power, the packet data system used by SkyMate minimizes the need for satellite airtime, allowing the tracking and monitoring functions to be performed much less expensively than with other satellite systems.

Your SkyMate system will work anywhere in the US and Canadian inland and coastal waters out to 1500 miles offshore. Service is available in the Caribbean, South America, Europe, the Mediterranean, and Asia for a small additional fee.

The three SkyMate Service Plans - Platinum/Gold/Silver - each include a monthly base charge that includes a specified amount of data sent and received over the satellite network PLUS two daily position reports and use of the SkyMate SentryMate monitoring service. Additional data is charged at a specified rate per character.

SkyMate also offers a "Drydock" plan for periods of 3 months or longer when you won't be using your boat at all. For a small monthly charge, your account remains open and accessable through Webmail.
