Equipment Lists and Details

The Navigation Station has built-in redundancy for all critical navigational systems. This includes two permanently mounted GPS systems, consisting of a Northstar 951 GPS (cockpit mounted) and a Raytheon 300 WAAS unit. There are two Raytheon autopilots, each driven by separate Whitlock rotary drives. Because of space issues, one is mounted on the steering pedestal and is attached via the steering pedestal chain sprockets. The other is mounted as a direct drive unit attached to the quadrant. There are also 2 separate navigational computers, backed up with the same software on each unit. One is an laptop and the other a desk top. The computer displays are mirrored in the cockpit using a flat screen daylight LCD. A logitech Trackman Live mouse is used in the cockpit to control the navigational software and the display characteristics. Both computers are networked so critical data files can be easily shared.

Communications

Current communications technologies offers the cruiser a rich environment spanning the entire radio spectrum. This spectrum is broken into various bands where specific functions and equipment must be used. The information on this page provides general guidance on band usage and the equipment/systems that Dakare carries. Dakare is capable of voice communications in the HF and VHF bands, and digital communications (e-mail) in the HF, VHF and Satellite bands.
  • Spectrum 25 Watt VHF/FM marine transceiver and loud hailer
  • 2 Meter Ham Radio
  • WinLink Ham E-mail
  • SailMail
  • ICOM SSB
  • SCS Pactor II Modem
  • IMARSAT-C (SeaSat 2)
  • Icom IC-M1V hand held VHF

Weather

While the Furuno Weather Fax and Navtex systems work independent of any other equipment, most other communications equipment requires a radio, computer, modem and software to work.
  • Dedicated Furuno Weather Fax
  • Dedicated Furuno Navtex
  • JVCom Weather Fax
  • SCS Weather Fax
  • OCENS Weather Fax
  • 2 Meter VHF Amplifier
  • SpeedTech Weather Station
  • SpeedTech Thunderbolt Storm Detector
  • Electronic Baroscope Barometer

System Highlights

The entire system is fully integrated, full chart and radar control is possible at both the nav center and the helm.

The KISS GAC (Keep It Simple Stupid GPS, Autopilot & Computer ) Controller is composed of 3 rotary switches that supports "mindless" operation of the equipment.

    The rotary switches control:

  • Which GPS unit is used
  • Which Autopilot system is used
  • Which input from one of the 2 GPS's or 2 Computers is used to control the Autopilot's Waypoint/XTE
